Every technology conversation in a modern building – IP phones, cameras, Wi-Fi, meeting-room displays, building automation – ends up at the same place: the cabling in the wall, the power in the rack and the systems that control who gets in. When those are right, nobody notices them. When they are wrong, everything above them is unreliable and nobody can work out why. eZon’s infrastructure lines cover this layer, and this article explains what each covers and where projects go wrong.
Structured cabling
Structured cabling is the copper and fibre backbone of a building, installed once and expected to last fifteen to twenty years while the equipment plugged into it is replaced three or four times. Getting it right means specifying the right category of copper for the bandwidth and power-over-Ethernet loads the building will see (Cat 6A is the sensible baseline for new commercial fit-outs), choosing single-mode or multimode fibre for the backbone based on distances, and insisting on proper pathways, labelling and certification testing. eZon’s structured cabling solutions cover the components and the design, and, for AV and long-distance links, eZon Fiberlink active optical cables carry HDMI, DisplayPort and USB over distances copper cannot.
Intercom and access control
Access control is where physical security and IT meet. IP intercoms at doors and gates, card and mobile credentials, biometric readers where the risk justifies them, and a management platform that logs who went where. The design questions are about doors and people: which doors are controlled, who needs access to which zones and when, how visitors are handled, and what happens during a power or network failure (fail-safe or fail-secure). eZon’s intercom and access control solutions integrate with the building’s network and, where required, with the phone system so that a door call rings a handset.
Parking
Parking systems – barriers, number-plate recognition, ticketing and payment, guidance displays showing free bays – are a building-management problem as much as a technology one. Automation
Building automation ties lighting, HVAC scheduling, meeting-room controls and energy monitoring into one system. Done well it reduces energy consumption and lets facilities staff manage a building from a dashboard rather than by walking it. Done badly it produces rooms that are too cold and lights that will not turn off. The difference is usually in commissioning: schedules, set points and sensor placement need to be tuned for how the building is actually used.
Why reliability is the point
In the UAE the pace of fit-outs and the speed at which businesses expect to occupy space create pressure to cut corners on the infrastructure layer, because it is invisible at handover. The consequences appear months later: intermittent network faults that are traced to untested cabling, doors that fail open, displays that drop signal. Three practices prevent most of it:
- Design before procurement – a cabling and power design tied to the floor plan, not a list of parts.
- Certified installation – test results for every link, delivered as part of handover.
- Documentation – labelled patch panels and an as-built drawing; the next contractor will thank you.
